20th Annual Storytelling Gathering

MiSmin Tuuhis – Greetings! We invite you to our 20th Annual Indian Canyon Storytelling Gathering, to be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016.  Ann Marie Sayers (Mutsun Ohlone) and Kanyon Sayers-Roods (Mutsun Ohlone / Chumash) are the hosts for this annual event, as caretakers of Indian Canyon.

Indian Canyon is the only federally recognized trust land along coastal California from Sonoma county to Santa Barbara county. It is about a 20 minute pleasant country drive outside Hollister, which is approximately 50 miles south of San Jose in central California. Google map to INDIAN CANYON

You are perhaps familiar with our Storytelling Festival, but we can summarize it as the first on-going California Indigenous Storytelling event that we know of. Our first event in 1996 was the catalyst that led to the founding of the California Indian Storytelling Association (CISA), the statewide organization that in later years held numerous storytelling events and sponsored or co-sponsored other activities all across the state. Many Elders and Culture Bearers of Native California communities have been presenters at CISA events, greatly contributing to the renaissance of Native culture in our state. Although Indian Canyon and this event are not directly affiliated with CISA, we wish to celebrate our Indian Canyon Storytelling Festival’s seminal place in this revival of our ancient knowledge and culture here in California.

Indian Canyon is the location of a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural education organization, Costanoan Indian Research. CIR is a long time non-profit that is dedicated to the preservation and thriving of Mutsun Ohlone and California Indigenous Original Knowledge and Culture.

Satuday Morning: We will have our 2nd Annual Historic Prayer Run  — From Mission San Juan Bautista to Indian Canyon – Where our Ohlone cousins/ allies and support will gather at the Mission Square of San Juan Bautista around 7:30 for a talking circle and stretch preparation —– Donations of coffee, water, juice, healthy snacks, drivers, runners, etc — greatly appreciated.
